News / Re: Season 16
« on: July 30, 2013, 07:26:32 pm »
@ Disaster Warning: (for some reason the site is not letting me quote a message)

I also disliked the episode, it was probably my least favourite of the season. I understand that it's an important message and I could see where the writers were trying to go with it, but I didn't think it was done well. Arthur wasn't the right choice to be the bully, and the scene where he sends Sue Ellen that email is just way too out of character. I know he was mad and he did regret it immediately afterwards, but I think the fact that he went through with the idea at all just doesn't work. He's trying to make us believe that his side of the story could be legit, and that Sue Ellen really could've just been overreacting to some jokes that are intended to be harmless, but then he resorts to writing and sending that email, and when you go and do something like that, that's pretty nasty.

And I also couldn't help but think that Sue Ellen was a bit out of character here. When Binky goes around bullying others in "Bully for Binky" and when Brain threatens to destroy George's gum dinosaur in "Desk Wars", she stood up to both of them. So why not stand up to Arthur? I guess it could be argued that because Arthur is usually a nice guy and she's usually good friends with him, she wouldn't know what to do when suddenly he seems to turn against her, but it still didn't quite feel in-character to me. I have to agree that Fern would've been a better choice than Sue Ellen. It might sound horrible to say so since she's my favourite character in the show, but as Fern is sensitive I think she would be an easier target, and if bullying got severe and persistent it's understandable that it would get to her.

Characters / Re: Raymond Hammett
« on: July 04, 2013, 07:54:22 pm »
The name is most likely a combination of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett, two authors who wrote a number of crime and detective novels in the 20th century. Raymond Chandler is best known for creating the Phillip Marlowe character, his novels include "The Big Sleep" and "Farewell, My Lovely". He was also a screenwriter who co-wrote the films "Double Indemnity" and "Strangers on a Train". Dashiell Hammett is probably best known for "The Maltese Falcon", and his other works include "Red Harvest", "The Glass Key" and "The Thin Man".

Episodes / Re: Suggest an Episode!
« on: June 18, 2013, 11:56:27 pm »
Oh how I would love to give a suggestion for a future episode. Problem is, I have no idea what to suggest. Arthur is one of those shows where if asked, I would know perhaps immediately which character(s) I would want my episode to focus on, but I'd have no idea what the episode would be about. Hopefully I'll think of something and suggest it to them on Facebook, as from what I've read on there, they seem to be lacking in appropriate ideas. It's a bit disappointing that an opportunity like this has come along and most of the page's "fans" seem to be treating it like a joke, but it's good to see that there are at least some who are taking it seriously.

Series Discussion / Re: How much Arthur have you seen?
« on: May 24, 2013, 09:16:53 am »
I've seen the first four seasons in full, I own Seasons 1-3 on DVD and have watched Season 4 on YouTube. I've also seen almost all of Season 16 when it aired on CBBC recently (I haven't seen "Flippity Francine" as they didn't air it here in the UK for some reason), and a handful of other eps from other seasons.

I can't say I've ever heard of "Wake, Rattle and Roll" or "Fender Bender 500". I may consider looking for some episodes of it on YouTube, it sounds interesting. And I remember watching shows like "Yogi's Treasure Hunt" and "Laff-a-Lympics", so from those series I vaguely remember some of the Hanna-Barbera characters you mentioned.

Crossover Dreamer, there are other Hanna-Barbera cartoons I like. I also like The Flintstones, Wacky Races, and Dastardly & Muttley in Their Flying Machines. I also enjoyed watching The Snorks when I was a kid, if mostly for the obvious reason that it was like an underwater equivalent of The Smurfs. I haven't watched it in years though. Outside of Hanna-Barbera and Disney cartoons, I also like Thundercats (both the original and 2011 series), Rugrats (never liked "All Grown Up" though), Inspector Gadget and Danger Mouse.

I don't think I ever watched any version of Care Bears, nor any of the original My Little Pony series. I will confess however that I am a brony when it comes to "Friendship is Magic".

Episodes / Re: Pal and Kate Episodes: Love 'Em or Leave 'Em?
« on: April 26, 2013, 10:38:55 pm »
I've got to agree with ralfsmouse here, the Pal and Kate episodes do feel much more like Rugrats than Arthur, even if the sole reason is because they share the same concept. And while it's a cute idea, I don't think it works here, and I think the reason why is because Pal and Kate are too intellectual and perfectly spoken. The reason why it worked so well with Rugrats is because when the babies talked and played together, they still acted like babies, even if most of that came down to how often they would purposely mispronounce their words. When Kate talks to Pal, she often feels more like a child prodigy, and in my opinion, that shouldn't be.

Hi, Crossover Dreamer. I really like the Disney Channel cartoons from the 80s and 90s too, especially TaleSpin and DuckTales. My favourite cartoon would have to be The Smurfs, it was my favourite show as a child and still remain a favourite of mine to this day.

General Discussion / Saying hey! (Hey!)

Hi everybody, new member here, and I just thought I would introduce myself. I confess that I never actually watched Arthur when I was a kid, but even in my adult years I still love watching cartoons so I thought I'd finally give it a look. I started watching it extensively in November last year and have been a fan of the show ever since. I've been looking for a forum to talk about Arthur and this one seemed like a pretty good one to join.
