Cast and Crew / Re: Michael Yarmush

I won't deny the great work Mr. Yarmush did for Arthur's voice in the first 4 seasons, but it just wasn't the same once puberty hit by 2000. That said, I think his voice would have still suit if Arthur wasn't stuck as an eternal 8 year old. Arthur Goes To Highschool? Well, maybe.

I didn't think his original replacement Justin Bradley was that bad - but the problem was his voice was too deep for an 8 year old aardvark. Am surprised they bothered redubbing all the episodes he did, but not Yarmush's Season 5 episodes.

It's just another sign that the Arthur writers have run out of ideas.

To be honest, Arthur has been re-treading plots for a while now - I recall the "persona swap" being a device used often ("Popular Girls", "Buster's Best Behavior", and to a degree "It's a No Brainer"). One could argue most plot points/devices were used up as early as the 3rd season, though that's out to debate. I suppose when you run a fairly straightforward (and somewhat restricted) show for almost 20 years, these things happen.

When they start making crossover episodes with other TV programs on PBS, then they have run out of ideas.

"Arthur and Barney's Fantastic Fantasy Adventure" - don't even think of funding it!  :D

Characters / Re: Mr. Ratburn

I hate to 'bump' a thread, but here goes.

Mr. Ratburn was a favorite of mine. The way he was always exaggerated as a strict teacher by this students was priceless. The slightly anguished contrast against the "easy" classes was always funny - even amid Rodentia Ratburn filling in back in Season 1.
His fascination with puppets was an interesting look at his life outside of teaching - his premiere episode was one of the first I recall watching.
Arthur Holden did a great job with his voice - I especially liked Mr. Ratburn's manic cackle used in some episodes.

Poor Mr. Ratburn, he's getting old.  ::)

I just cannot fathom the flash animation - the older drawn animation suited the style much better in my view. The flash animated characters look too stiff in my eyes. I'm not going to slam flash animation as a whole - it works for other cartoons, just not Arthur in my opinion.

I do suppose kids growing up on the "new" Arthur could care less and may enjoy the newer seasons. If they enjoy it, that's fine for them.

General Discussion / Another day, another newbie

Just another Arthur fan dropping by to say "hi" and stick around for a while.

I grew up sporadically watching the Arthur series, then watching it nearly every day after my old favorite program ("Shining Time Station") was canned by PBS in 1998. I also read the books, the originals and the chapter books - the originals were best, I think.

Although I drifted away from the series by 2003 (just got tired of it - as blunt as that seems) I was recently called back to the earlier episodes - I still find them entertaining. My resident PBS stations no longer air the original episodes (last airing I recall was the Christmas special last year - I just had to keep it on) which I think is a shame. I did catch one of the newer episodes recently, but I'll save that for another thread.

Right, cya around.
