News / Re: Season 16
« on: April 09, 2013, 11:59:30 pm »
Looking forward to "The Last Tough Customer" after seeing that preview (even if I still can't completely get past the new animation), but agreed that Arthur seemed way out of character for teasing Sue Ellen like that in the other clip. He was forced to wear an odd sweater before ("Meek For a Week", I believe).

While looking at the episode list on Wikipedia, I saw someone added these false Season 17 episodes. They're so random and/or generic that I thought I'd post them here before they get removed.  :P

Quote
Season 17 (2013-2014)

1. Arthur And The Duststorm: Arthur, Buster, Brain, Muffy, Binky, George and Ladonna get trapped in a dust storm.
Buster gets a B: The class takes a big test and when Mr. Ratburn hands out the scores, Busters paper shows a B.

2. The New Rule: Elwood City has a new rule that no one can EVER get mad at someone ever again, Binky tries not to bully anyone, Buster will never get upset, Francine will never yell again and Muffy will never be a show off and never get mean at everyone.
Francine Gets Shocked: Francine gets really sad when Nemo gets sick.

3. Arthur Sees The Light: Arthur and his friends see the northern lights.
The Haunted House: The tibble twins make a haunted house to scare D.W., Emily and James.

4. George Bends his Antlers: Georges antlers get stuck in his locker again and when he tries to get it out, it tears off his head.
The Mystery: Buster cracks the case about Arthurs missing book.

5. Muffy's Date: Muffy starts to be in love with Arthur and Arthur is shocked!
Busters Date" Buster has a crush on Francine and Francine is shocked!

Hmm, I know they aired April 9th on its namesake's day last year, and I'm pretty sure the year before that as well (but not 2010 because they premiered "Looking For Bonnie/The Secret Origin of Supernova" that day).

Episodes / Re: Bleep
« on: April 09, 2013, 11:49:29 pm »
If it helps, I read on a Facebook post (a conversation was prompted by some concerned viewers) that the word the voice actors used when talking it out was "chicken"?
Though, if they were going to bleep out the word anyway, why have an actual word to say in place? My guess is to account for an accurate length of time for such a word (as in the word had to be about 1 second or so in length in order for the animation and audio to sync up)

If it's chicken that's kind of ironic. That word has been used several times in the show and we never hear the bleep. :P

"Now everybody can enjoy my tasty tender (bleep) made with real (bleep) flavor! Ain't that right, Funky (bleep)?"

Series Discussion / Favorite Incidental Music
« on: April 09, 2013, 11:43:09 pm »
I'm sure a lot of longtime Arthur viewers have noticed how often the show uses the same incidental music cues throughout the episodes, with many of the classic ones still being used today. What are some of your favorite ones?

One that always makes me laugh is the sting that always plays when someone is shocked or unsettled (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8M6rrbtHXQ#t=11m10s). It always plays in my head whenever I have any "OMG!" or "WHAT?!" moments.

Though it's not used much, I also like that twangy guitar cue that was sometimes used around Season 12 or so (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFVuuHVE1lU#t=0m42s).

To add to the "DW's Age" observations, Emily is already 5 in "D.W.'s Perfect Wish", but "D.W. Bossy Boots" shows her 5th birthday party, so that episode takes place before D.W.'s Perfect Wish (and that's ignoring the fact that Emily had her newer look there, of course).

In "Buster's Amish Mismatch", Brain says that there's a "lack of farmland in the area". Though there are at least three episodes that show farmland that is suggested to be close to Elwood City: the insanely long line to get Binky tickets in "Meet Binky", the end of "Buster's Carpool Catastrophe" (the cooking class couldn't have been that far away), and when Buster tells George he's 2/3 of the way to Elwood City from Crown City in "The Long Road Home".

And another calendar/school inconsistency: In "The Long Road Home", George has his walk scheduled for July 26 on his calendar, but there are scenes that take place in school that same week.

Did April 9th air today per tradition? I wasn't home to catch it on my main station, but my 24-hour PBS Kids station (a subchannel of the main station) aired "Muffy's Classy Classics Club/Best Enemies". I know when they chose to air April 9th in honor of the Newtown shooting, MCCC/BE was originally scheduled to air that day, and only the main station aired April 9th. The subchannel still aired MCCC/BE that day.

Yeah, I understand why they can't air them anymore. When I found out about the scandal, the Arthur episodes were one of the first things that came to mind, especially seeing how Binky mentioned his (former) records to Francine in Great Macgrady.

As of now, the episodes are still on Netflix and Amazon.

In the Great McGrady when the kids were having a fantasy about Mrs. McGrady dying of cancer. There was a scene of McGrady walking down the hall into some bright glowing light effects at the end of the fantasy. But the efx were removed and I believe the scene may be gone entirely in the final cut. Anyway that whole show is not airing now because of the Lance Armstrong cheating admission.

I think I see what you're talking about...This fantasy?: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yfZgS6QYAlA#t=8m18s

At 9:09, was that green wall at the end of the hall added in to cover up the "light effects"? It looks like it. Never noticed that. Now we know why Francine was so overwhelmed from that dream. Was the dialogue about Mrs. Macgrady changing jobs added in as well? Because it doesn't really the fit the original context of her supposed to be "dying".

Series Discussion / Re: Favorite Title Cards

Very interesting read, Earwig.  :)

My favorite title card is the "Magnifying Glass" one where Buster sticks his head through it and goes "Hey!"

Was anyone else watching long enough to remember when the episode titles were not read aloud? I think those original prints still air in other countries, because a lot of the Season 1 recordings on YouTube are like that. Does anyone know exactly when they started doing the title voiceovers and when they added them to the Season 1 reruns? I'm assuming it was as soon as Season 2 started, but I thought I remembered seeing some Season 2 episodes that did not have the voiceovers. This was also around the time Random House started selling Arthur VHS's, so some episodes on those didn't have the voiceovers while some did.

So "Room to Ride/The Frensky Family Fiasco" and "The Great MacGrady" are now banned? I was fearing this would happen. Such a shame that such a powerful episode like "The Great Macgrady" will never air anymore. :'( They even aired it every day of the week it premiered.

What about "Binky vs. Binky/Operation: D.W.!"? That one used a parody of him, but will that still be banned, too? It actually aired very recently where I live. (My station was also one of the few that still chose to air the controversial Postcards From Buster "Sugartime!" episode) Are these episodes going to be removed from Netflix and Amazon Video as well?
