Series Discussion / Re: Why do people hate Arthur so much?
« on: October 20, 2012, 09:08:56 pm »
At the risk of skiving off topic, it amazes me that to this day, Pokemon is STILL a big hit... over ten years later, I don't believe that fandom has ever waved... I honestly fell off that bandwagon maybe two or three years afterwards when it started becoming too much keep up with, so it astounds me that there's people out there who are able to memorize how ever many number of creatures there are today, as well as their powers and everything.

How could I possibly yell at you when you are using such wonderful vocabulary?

Series Discussion / How much Arthur have you seen?
« on: October 20, 2012, 06:44:00 pm »
I've been curious lately how many people on here have actually seen every single episode of Arthur. I'm sure a bunch have, but I thought this might be a neat thread topic.

Take my title of obsessed Arthur fan away, because there are a few episodes that I haven't seen from season 14 for the fact that for a while I had went on an Arthur hiatus and haven't gotten to see them:

"Follow the Bouncing Ball"/"Buster Baxter and the Letter from Sea"
"Around the World in 11 Minutes"/"Muffy and the Big Bad Blog"
"Arthur Unravels"/"All the Rage"
"Buster Spaces Out"/"The Long Road Home"
"Grandpa Dave's Memory Album"/"Buster's Carpool Catastrophe"
"Night of the Tibble"/"Read and Flumberghast"

Now as for the last two, I haven't seen those season 15 and 16 episodes because for the first it somehow slipped by me when it aired, and the second I my DVR forgot to tape.  :P

I might as well take this opportunity to mention that I am extremely bummed that I haven't been able to see Friday's episode. I had to go out at the time it was on so I made sure my DVR was set to tape it, but for some strange reason it didn't tape.  >:(

But it does sound good that the animation was improved. That is a plus. And for the most part I have gotten used to the animation, just there are occasions when I still haven't quite softened up completely to it.

Series Discussion / Re: Teen Arthur? Let's discuss!

It would work, but it won't last as long as Arthur did as a third grader. A perfect example is what happened to the Rugrats.

See that's another thing: it wouldn't have to. The spinoff would have a fixed and strict amount of seasons, much like Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated. Something like: first season = sophomore year, second season = junior year, and the last season = senior year, with a freshman flashback episode somewhere in there.

I dunno, I don't even see it being able to last that long. In my mind, if they were to do a spinoff show, I doubt it would have the umph to last more than two seasons before people were done with it...that is, if they would even give it a chance to start out with.

Ladonna and Bud are pretty good characters. And you will never get completely used to the animation, at least I haven't, but you will soften up to it much over time.

This goes back to what I was saying in another thread, but I think that the main problem with Alex and Maria and becoming more established is the fact that they may have become these anonymous blanks that everyone fears toying with for some reason. Dunno for sure though.

Arthur on the Web / Re: Arthur's Big Character Database (ABCD)

At any rate, that is pretty cool. And then I have to wonder if the name was made intentionally so that it would turn out ABCD.

You know I'm weird when I spend more time talking about a name of a site than the site itself.  :P

Who knows? He easily could make a random sporadic appearance, but the hard part is that he only has one connection in the Arthur universe: George. A character like Ladonna will be easy to give return appearances, as she goes to Lakewood, but you need to have an outside school plot including George in some way to give him a return appearance, which very few episodes can do.

They have had multiple speaking roles throughout the series. CJ can expand more on that probably.

Series Discussion / Re: Unrealism in Arthur?

I know I've mentioned this in another thread somewhere, but I found it far-fetched that there would be restaurants that would cater specifically to people with specific food allergies (in this case, a Chinese restaurant that serves people with peanut allergies, like Binky suddenly had for no reason), until Hubert pointed out that there actually are restaurants like that... in France...

Also, I still stand by my claim that "Sue Ellen Chickens Out" paints a very broad picture of business: I think in a real-life scenario, Mr. Manino really wouldn't have much say in the fate of the Sugar Bowl, and despite Sue Ellen's little protest, or even Mr. Manino changing his mind about selling, the Sugar Bowl would have closed anyway, and Chickin Lickin' would have set up a new location there.

As I've said before, Mr. Manino OWNS the Sugar Bowl ENTIRELY. He also founded it.

Since the beginning the series never focused specifically on Arthur and it isn't meant to. Right from the get-go, even with the series being called Arthur, they knew they were going to spend just as much/even more time on other characters, and that seems to be all around evident from the start. I don't think they named it Arthur to only focus on Arthur, but rather because the books tended to be labeled Arthur, so it only made sense for the series to be called that.
But then you run into the fact that pretty much the entire crew is afraid to name them anymore, I think. They most likely are becoming so conscious of the abundance of unnamed characters that they probably start to seem off limits to name. The only way I can even imagine background characters really being named anymore is if the crew has always had some name for the character that they never quite communicated to the public.

And then you also face the issue of naming a character twice, such as accidentally not knowing that a character has a name and the crew names them again. I know this has happened multiple times in the Muppet universe, and I think that it is bound to happen at some point if they start naming more characters. Just look at Tom, who was later renamed Gunky (though it's debatable if it is the same character and if Gunky is a nickname). And plus, even characters like Mr. Haney and Mr. Ratburn have multiple first names.

There is ways around loopholes like that.

Of course there is. I know that. I am just saying that I imagine those are the kind of things that go through the crew's mind and why we don't have characters being named anymore.

Interesting. I never really heard of that much.

Series Discussion / Unrealism in Arthur?
« on: October 20, 2012, 01:41:27 pm »
Arthur has always been about everyday kids facing everyday problems. But has anyone noticed some fantastical events going on in the series as of late?

For example, "To Eat or Not to Eat." A company starts selling candy that makes kids run around with sparkles coming out of their mouths? And candy with radioactive elements in it?

And even more recently, in "Based on a True Story," though I know that something unbelievable had to happen to Ladonna at the end in order for the story to work correctly, but a raccoon taking hat? An abundance of coins pouring out of a soda machine?

I even found the guy bringing a koala into the preschool to be a tad unreasonable.
