Title: Arthur's Knee
Post by: Snowth Woogle on March 23, 2013, 08:27:25 pm
I was watching this episode on tape the other day. As a kid, and even still to this day, it always struck me that this episode was kind of "dark" compared to the rest of the series, though I have to wonder if it was intentional, to sort of send the message of why not to disobey your parents when they tell you not to go somewhere: the whole scene at the dump played out in a rather unnerving manner, between the troublesome music scoring that was used, D.W.'s constant wailing in fear for her brother, and Arthur's near blood-curdling scream as he cut his knee. Even their arrival home seemed to play up a slight "dark" tone as well, between Arthur and D.W. basically sneaking into their own home, and Arthur's moaning every time he moved his knee, which caused D.W. to gasp in worry.

I also have to wonder though, looking at it as an adult, if perhaps the lima bean can aspect might have been exaggerated just a bit; I'm all too familiar with how sharp the edge of can lids can be, but would Arthur bumping his knee up against do as much damage as it did? I mean considering he was wearing his blue jeans, and denim seems to be a rather study and durable fabric. I'm not saying it's entirely impossible, I've had to wade my way through briars and thorns before while wearing long pants and I still had pin-hole punctures in my skin, but I wonder if a thicker and stronger fabric like denim wouldn't have at least spared Arthur that much damage to his knee.

I will say this though, I LOVE the intro with all of Arthur's various different organs, all wearing his glasses and evetrything.

Yes, I though that this episode was awfully dark for a PBS Kids' show. I wonder why every Arthur episode is rated TV-Y. I think that certain episodes should be rated TV-Y7, like "Sue Ellen's Lost Diary"/"Arthur's Knee." Are the ratings different in other countries?

To be honest, the tease with Arthur's organs is my least favorite part of that story.

The part with Arthur's organs was pretty funny to me. XD

Yes, I would assume that his jeans would at least protect his legs to a greater extent...I mean, did you see the size of that cut? Simply scraping his knee by accident along that lima beans can shouldn't have torn a giant hole in his knee, especially considering how sturdy and tough denim is. The wound he received was as big as if someone intentionally sawed through his jeans with that can.

I will admit that watching that episode, with the intense music and scary garbage dump, made me cringe a bit...it was pretty horrific for an Arthur episode. The mood was really set here.

Yes, it did seem darker than others. Even the name sounds ominous! I mean, it's so subtle and short: Arthur's Knee. Like, "What about his knee?"

I, personally, found D.W.'s constant yelps funny...is that weird?

As for the jean/cut thing, maybe Arthur was moving his knee in a swiping motion. That would be enough force to tear through the pants, and Arthur's skin...I think. It's not like I'm a doctor or anything.

My dad screamed when Arthur cut his knee.  :D I always liked this episode, but i always would get a little OCD whenever i see that part when Arthur and D.W. crawl past the window. in the dirt.  :o I had thought Arthur would need something worse than a tetras booster. like, an amputation.  ;D
