Title: Does Season 16's animation remind anyone of...
Post by: LovingBeagles on February 27, 2013, 06:17:17 pm
...the animation of "Martha Speaks"?

This was actually one of my first thoughts after seeing the season 16 animation. The characters sort of have choppy, robotic movements, and their arms and legs seems sort of hinged at the joints when they move. I think I will even go as far to as to say that Martha Speaks's backgrounds and coloration is about as detailed, if not more detailed, than the backgrounds of Arthur's season 16.

Keep in mind this is the first time 9 Story has ever done Arthur (sorry Postcards From Buster does not count). This reminds me of how many errors Season 1 of Arthur had. It was plagued with errors. However the last episodes of Season 1 improved. I think this is what will happen with Arthur when the rest of Season 16 airs and when Season 17 airs later on this year (Season 17 has already been confirmed).

Now that you mention it, LovingBeagles, the animation does remind me of Martha Speaks. And I've only seen one episode of Martha Speaks plus its commercials. Someone else said it reminded them of Max and Ruby.

I wonder what season 17 will be like.

We will find out later this year.

Keep in mind season 1 had three times the episodes as a standard season. By "last episodes", it would be the equivalent of season 18.

That maybe true, but still it doesn't change the out come. Season 1 still had errors no matter what side of the coin you flipped. They eventually improved the animation as the show went on.

I've never actually sat down at watched MARTHA SPEAKS, but from the promos that I always see tagged to the end of ARTHUR everyday, the animation for that show, to me, seems to go back and forth... there are some moments when it seems stiff, robotic, and limited, but at other times, it actually does look rather smooth and fluid in some sequences... I guess maybe like with traditional hand-drawn animation, Flash animation can vary depending on whatever artists and animators are working on specific episodes.

Yeah pretty much.

Pretty much the same thing happened to Cyberchase on PBS. It started out as hand-drawn, but switched to Flash animation in much later seasons. For both Arthur and Cyberchase, the old animations are so much better. Like others have said, the new animations are so robotic. I've also noticed sometimes Arthur's eyes/pupils are crooked and off-center from his glasses lenses... Makes him look silly.

Strangely enough, I actually liked the Flash animation of Cyberchase. It's complicated (my reason, I mean, not the animation).

For Arthur, though, I'm not too happy about the change, as I've stated many times on this forum.

Both need to be taken off. Once a series hits the fourth season, it usually uses all of the energy it can.
Their also owned by the same company, 9 Story
