Teen Arthur? Let's discuss!

Yes, I know PBS will probably never do something like this. But personally, I think it would be one of the best things ever attempted. Some people on the Internet have said (and this was before the current season even started) that Arthur is wearing thin on storylines. I'm NOT stating an opinion on that statement, but I'm saying: if that were true, I feel like a movie/spinoff/something geared towards an older audience would give more horizon and ground to cover.

Think about it: the spinoff would still have the same innocence, quality, humor, and good life lessons as the original...but the realistic aspect would get ONLY SLIGHTLY more intense and mature. You know, covering issues that would be too heavy for a kids show (i.e. puberty, say no to drugs, peer pressure, prejudice, the real reason why your parents divorced, etc.) but with grace. They could even do an "And Now A Word From Us Teens" type of segment.

Also think about this: the original voices of Arthur and Brain coming back (if their voices aren't WAY TOO deep, lol)!

I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts on this! ;D

I will say that this could work, but there is a slim chance it would turn out successfully. There are just so many shows where characters are grown up that something would have to make a show or special where the same thing happens in this franchise, they would need to make something super special about one that isn't present in many other franchise grow ups.

It would work, but it won't last as long as Arthur did as a third grader. A perfect example is what happened to the Rugrats.

See that's another thing: it wouldn't have to. The spinoff would have a fixed and strict amount of seasons, much like Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated. Something like: first season = sophomore year, second season = junior year, and the last season = senior year, with a freshman flashback episode somewhere in there.

I dunno, I don't even see it being able to last that long. In my mind, if they were to do a spinoff show, I doubt it would have the umph to last more than two seasons before people were done with it...that is, if they would even give it a chance to start out with.

I remember reading an interview with Marc Brown--I think it was in Parade Magazine, but I'm not sure--that Brown said Arthur would always be an 8-year old. That's too bad because I would so like to see a series of Arthur as a teen. I wish I could find the article!

I was picturing a live action movie where the characters are human. Actually, I was picturing Arthur in college, D.W. in high school, and Kate in junior high. Perhaps an all-star cast?

Though I think that what Marc Brown was saying there was that he wasn't going to grow up the characters on a permanent basis...I don't think that interview entirely rules out the chance of one special or spinoff.

A live action special would be interesting, except I'm not sure how the diverse amount of animals could be simulated successfully.

Eh, I don't know. There's just something about a live-action/humanized Arthur that makes me a little uncomfortable. But I do agree that a college Arthur/high school DW/jr. high Kate special sounds interesting.

I like the concept of live-action Arthur, its just the execution most likely wouldn't work.
