Arthur's Family Vacation
« on: August 05, 2013, 04:16:54 pm »
One of my favorite early episodes (even did a YouTube Poop on it long ago), but I have to ask, am I the only one who noticed Sharky's expression actually changes throughout the episode? His expression is mostly neutral for the most part, but notice how when Mr. Read is tying back to the roof of the car (after he was in the cow truck) he looks angry, when D.W. slams him on the bed onto of Arthur he looks like he's in pain, later when D.W. crams him into the ridiculously tiny swimming pool he looks so ****ed, and finally when they all go to the movie he looks really happy.

Is that inflatable pool toy possessed or something/  :o

EDIT: Picturrrrrres

I've never noticed the expression change before, but I've got to say that it's pretty funny. I've always thought that Sharky was a great part of the episode, and that all of the scenes with him were some of my favorites from the episode.

I just watched this episode again on YouTube and noticed a few things:

The layout of this episode is very similar to "Arthur's Almost Boring Day." It has a lot of short scenes, almost like self contained comedy sketches. It has an ongoing theme (Arthur's essay in AABD, Arthur going to camp in AFV), and it resolves with the timeframe not being as bad as Arthur thought it would be.

I had forgotten about the gas chamber comment, and I have also read that it was censored by at least some PBS stations.

It's been a while since I've seen a season one episode, I had forgotten about the white tongues.

I wasn't aware of that, it was never censored on my PBS.

Yeah, I can see why they would want to avoid any offensiveness (I know about gas chambers, my Grade 8 Reading teacher was OBSESSED with the Holocaust), but I serious doubt little kids are even going to get it, they probably just think D.W. is saying exactly what's on the tin: being trapped in a small, closed area, with Kate's soiled and smelly diaper.

@ralphsmouse:
Gas chamber comment?  :o haven't heard THAT one.  ???

~*We don't have to be defined by the things we did or didn't do in our past. Some people allow themselves to be controlled by regret. Maybe it's a regret, maybe it's not. It's merely something that happened. Get over it.*~
