Francine & Muffy- Love/Hate Relationship?
« on: May 07, 2013, 06:15:04 pm »
We know that Francine and Muffy are best friends. But they are always trying to get at each other at the same time...like in "Spoiled Rotten" Francine calls Muffy out for being spoiled (as the episode title implies). "Castles in the Sky" also showed an imagination sequence of Francine's treehouse idea...she wrecks Muffy's "tea party" and laughs at her.

Even a newer episode, "Sue Ellen Vegges Out" shows that both of them are trying to get at each other, saying that the other couldn't go vegetarian.

And countless other instances of them trying to get at or make fun of the other.

In contrast, we see that in "Matchmaker, Matchbreaker", they even dream of their life together as "sisters" (which they would actually be in-laws)...

"MacFrensky" showed Muffy and Francine corroborating to bring the Brain's Merit Score down...

And countless other instances where they are shown as best friends.

Then there's that one episode (forgot the name) where Francine hangs out with Jenna, so they break up for a while...only to reconcile at the end.

I know every friendship pairing has its ups and downs (even/especially Arthur and Buster), but it's just really hard to understand these two...it's like they have a love/hate or friend/enemy relationship.

Seriously, what is up with these two?

Um, a LOT of best friends in television are like this... Ernie and Bert, Hawkeye and B.J., among others...
I stretch like a snake, and I shimmy and shake, and I bounce like a ball, and I say something cute when you give me a squeeze!

Snowth you're right. Heck The Simpsons (which Arthur shares similarities too) has the samething happen with Bart and Milhouse. It's a common occurrence.

Yeah, I guess it does happen a lot  (though I haven't seen Sesame Street very often, so I can't really such how they would do that on a show like Sesame Street). But it's just that, with Muffy and Francine, it's gotten to the point where it's hard to even determine whether they're friends or enemies. Most similar best friend pairings usually have the two either casually teasing each other or reconciling at the end of an episode. But between these two, like I said, it's almost hard to tell.

Though I guess one could interpret the "hate" part of this relationship as casual teasing.

One of the most similar parallels in another show that sticks out to me is Cyborg and Beast Boy from Teen Titans. They're known to be best friends (in fact, Beast Boy even said so in "Stranded") but at other times, they are arguing in a rather unfriendly manner. Though I can't shake off the feeling that they are different from Muffy and Francine...mostly because they both are part of a larger team, I guess.
