Character Naming
« on: October 12, 2012, 10:14:40 pm »
I thought this might be worth discussing: did anyone ever notice how all of the main Arthur characters have such obscure names, (minus Jane and David Read, of course), yet all the other, supporting characters seem to have such generic names? I've always found it interesting, and I wonder if that could have anything to do with many characters not being created and/or named until the TV series?

I never really gave it much thought myself, but I kind of see your point... it's a similar case with myself, for example, I almost always try to give my characters names you don't hear very often, especially for fictional characters (Bethany Crystal would have been THE Bethany had it not been for that Frankel chick), and if not, then I'll give them the name that they look like (ala to me, Steve D'Monster... he just looked like a Steve to me).

You mention the secondary/supporting characters having rather generic names, that may seem true for the most part, however, there are a few exceptions, like Vecita for example... that's a name I don't hear very often, even for Latino characters in other programs.

I also just realized that even characters like George and Jenna, who sort of started out in supporting roles and crept up the totem poles, have fairly generic names also.

But Vicita is a good example of a minor character without a common name, but then again, I dunno if she should be given a pardon because her family is not American.
